There are many people who get a kick of out the sport of bowling, not so much for the competition or to master the game, but because they enjoy getting together with their friends and family members at their local bowling lanes and enjoying the interaction of the game. However, you will find someone in almost every group of people who wants to take the game to the next level. These folks have often purchased bowling shoes and bowling balls that have been custom fitted for them, so they can better their game and perhaps even show off somewhat.

When choosing a ball for tenpin bowling, there are a number of things to consider, as there are different types of balls and accessories from which to choose. One of the first things to think about is how much money you are willing to spend. Are you planning to become a regular bowler who gets involved in league bowling? Or do you have aspirations to play in amateur bowling tournaments or even to become a professional bowler and enter championship bowling tournaments?

The more seriously someone takes the sport of bowling, the more they generally will invest in their bowling balls and other equipment. Even though it does not make much sense to spend a lot of money for a custom ball for a youngster who is taking bowling lessons to learn the game, and who is still growing, such an investment can make a lot of sense for the person who wants to master the game and perhaps become a professional player.

Having the right bowling ball can definitely affect the outcome of one's game. While most of the time the local bowling facility will have hundreds of balls available for people to choose from when they come in to play a couple games, most of these balls have been very well used and are no longer good quality and certainly could not be considered high performance pieces of equipment.

The main problem with the balls that are available for free at the bowling lanes is that they are not taken care of correctly and they withstand a great deal of abuse at the hands of the many people who use them. The fact is that most people do not take care of this equipment that is available for their free use. At the same time, alley owners usually do not invest in high quality equipment because of how it is treated by the public.

For those who do invest in good quality bowling balls, they will also need to buy some basic bowling accessories in order to keep their stuff in good condition. A bag that is specifically made to safely transport the ball from home to the alley is important. Often the bag will also accommodate bowling shoes as well as bowling gloves, and special ball cleaners and polishes that also help to keep a ball in good condition.

Most of the time, people who use their own bowling balls whenever they bowl will start getting higher scores and enjoy those high scores fairly consistently. On the other hand, those who use the balls that are free to use at the local bowling lanes often have a difficult time adapting and getting consistent scores. This is because the balls are typically not in the best condition and the player must get accustomed to the feel and action of the ball each time they go bowling.

For those who love the game of bowling and enjoy spending their free time at the lanes with their friends and getting into some friendly competition, learning good bowling techniques is usually important. You can take lessons and learn many of the basics, and you can watch the professional bowlers in bowling tournaments. Soon you will see that having a good curve ball in important. In this brief article are some simple tips for helping to make sure you hook your bowling ball and increase your scores.

Many bowlers at all levels struggle for years to get their bowling balls to hook the way they should, desperately trying to learn the proper way to get consistent hooks. It is universally known that the best and most consistent way to bowl a strike to have a good hook. Having the right bowling shoes and ball can help, but in the end, knowing this technique and practicing it regularly is the best way to hook that ball into the pocket and walk away with a strike.

There are many bowlers who have the mistaken notion that the most important thing they can do is increase the amount of power they use to get the ball down the lane. The truth is that throwing a slower bowling ball that has a good hook to it has a better chance of knocking down all the pins than a hard hit from a straight ball. Because of this fact many bowlers will take lessons and buy instructional bowling videos in an attempt to improve their game.

In tenpin bowling, successfully hooking a ball, also known as having a good curve ball, is a combination of speed and rotation. If these two elements are missing or are not in the proper balance, then the ball will hook too soon and miss the pocket. Not enough speed, too much speed, not enough rotation, too much rotation; all of these instances can cause a problem with achieving the proper curve to the ball and this will not only result in not getting a strike, but often in ending up with a dreaded "split."

The key to success in learning to hook the ball is all in the wrist. Proper wrist movement means that you start your swing with your hand so that your thumb is at about the one o'clock position. Allow the ball to go back as far as possible, and then as you swing your arm forward, simply rotate your hand to the left, as if you were going to shake hands with someone. Do this at about the halfway point from the farthest point back, and before releasing the ball.

Now that you know these basic factors, the next step is to slightly adjust the starting position of your thumb and the rotation of your hand when releasing the ball. Once you find just the perfect combination, which is slightly different for each bowler, you should strive to practice it often so it becomes second nature. As you do so, you will be able to consistently hook your bowling ball, find the sweet spot of the rack of pins and enjoy higher scores on a regular basis.

While bowling has been a popular pastime for many decades in the United States and in many other countries, it seems that in recent years there has been a resurgence of popularity in the game. Today it is usually quite easy to find a bowling center that is easily accessible for most people. Often new bowlers like to use the free equipment available at the lanes, yet when they start to get more into the game they usually want to have their own shoes and ball. Bowling bags are the best way to carry and organize their bowling gear.

These days, a bowling bag is designed to do a lot more then simply transport your bowling ball from your home to the bowling lanes and back again. With the addition of various bowling gear, the bowling ball bag is also used to store and organize all the equipment that a bowler needs to take with him or her to the bowling lanes.

When considering the various bowling bags available on the market, you should carefully consider how well-built and sturdy the bag is. The best type of bowling bag is going to have a handle that is durable and also comfortable in your hand. It should also have a reinforced bottom and strong stitching which will ensure a long life.

These points are important because it must be remembered that just one bowling ball can weigh as much as 16 pounds. If the bowling bag you are considering is a double bag, which will carry two balls and two pair of bowling shoes as well as other related accessories, then the durability of the bowling bag is even more important because of the weight it will be required to carry. Before investing in a double bag, be sure to test yourself and see if you will be able to comfortably carry a double bag that is fully loaded with balls, shoes and accessories. While it can seem more convenient for a couple to buy one double bag, it can often simply be too much for one person to carry.

There are also bags that will accommodate three to four bowling balls, and even more if you need that. These are rather special bags and they come with rollers on the bottom to make it easier to move them. However, it is still important to remember that when one of these bags is fully loaded, it must still be lifted in and out of your vehicle and often down a short flight of stairs to the player area of the bowling alley.

Most serious bowlers today not only fill up their bowling bags with the basic necessities, such as their shoes and their custom ball, but also with any number of various items that bowlers can make use of these days. Some of these items include tape, wrist supports, powder, rosin and ball cleaner, just to name a few. Most of the bags have special storage compartments for these items so that they can be found easily and will not be crushed or damaged by the ball. With a loaded bowling bag in your garage or car, you will be ready to join your friends at the bowling lanes at a moment's notice.

Home improvement for Alistair Haynes is not just a job but a work of art. One of the simplest tip she shared with her readers is to use coasters for drinks to protect their tables. It is her passion and she is very good at it. She knows what she is doing and she is ready to show you her talent. Contact her in her personal website and be helped now.

Bowling is a great sport and pastime that many people across the US and other parts of the world enjoy participating in on a regular basis. There are bowling centers in most neighborhoods where friends and family can congregate and enjoy trying to knock down those stubborn pins, as well as getting into a bit of friendly competition as they try to out do one another. Anyone who ends up at the bowling alley a few times a week would do well to get themselves a nice bowling ball bag so they can carry all of their essential bowling supplies and accessories that they need.

With a good quality, sturdy bowling bag, you can take along your custom bowling ball as well as other bowling accessories that you might need. One of the basics, other than the bowling ball of your choice, is a good pair of shoes made specifically for bowling. Most bowling bags sold these days are designed to accommodate a bowling ball and a pair of shoes at the very least. Other bags will carry much more than that as well and give the serious bowler everything he needs to have on hand in order to bowl a good game.

Any bowler who is serious about their game will most likely have acquired a custom bowling ball fitted to them and a quality pair of bowling shoes that fit their feet just right. With these basics in place, the next thing a serious bowler needs is a good, sturdy bowling ball bag that can easily accommodate their belongings and that is also sturdy, durable and well-made.

The strength and durability of the bowling bag you select is important because of the fact that the bowling ball itself will weight somewhere from 12 to 16 pounds. The last thing you want to happen is for the handle to break or for the bag to come apart at the seams and have your bowling ball either landing on your foot or rolling across an asphalt parking lot. Of course, if it lands on your foot, the main damage will be to yourself, and if the ball goes careening across a rough terrain, a great deal of damage can be done to the ball, which may not be easily fixed.

A good bag will have a secure place for the bowling ball and a separate place for the shoes. Often these bags are designed with a separate compartment either at the bottom or at the top where the shoes can be placed so that they don't get crushed and will maintain their shape. Some also have special inserts that can be put into the shoe compartment to reduce smells and to help keep moisture from building in the bag.

There are many models of bowling bags that you will be able to find at most bowling alleys. Some are designed to carry just one bowling ball, while others will carry multiple balls. These larger bags usually have wheels on the bottom for ease of movement. The bowling ball bag that is right for you will depend on how many additional supplies that you will need to take with you to the lanes.

If you feel you have the desire to change the look of your home from its usual façade, then it is time for you to meet Tania Hurtis. She is the brains of home improvement. She can change our homes into a style you never imagine possible. Call her now and experience her talents, especially her recommended tools of choice like measuring wheels, precision tools and so on.

Bowling is a sport game in which a player, or bowler, attempts to knock down as many bowling pins as possible using a smooth, heavy ball. The pins are placed at the end of a long, narrow lane. The bowler has to roll the ball all the way to the end of the lane to be able to knock down the pins. As with any other sport, there are official regulations that dictate the proper dimensions for all the elements of the game, including the Dimensions of a Bowling Lane.

The regulations followed in official bowling games are dictated by the American Bowling Congress.

According to the American Bowling Congress, bowling lanes be required to be 60 feet or 18.28 meters from the foul line to the part where the head pin, or 1 pin, is placed, with a half-inch tolerance. The foul stripe delineates the area where the bowlers are allowed to extend their body parts prior to the release of the bowling ball. The head pin, on the other hand, is the pin located at the front of all the other pins.

The distance from the foul line to the end of the lane, also called the pit, is 62 feet, 10 3/16 inches. This dimension does not include the width of the tail plank. The maximum width for the tail plank is two inches. It measures 2 feet 10 3/16 inches from the head pin to the pit.

The lane is generally 3.5 feet or 1.07 meters wide, but any width ranging from 41 to 42 inches is okay. It generally consists of 39 boards, which are made up of wood or synthetic material. The allowable range for the combined measurements of the lane and the two gutters flanking it is 60 inches or 5 feet, to 60 ¼ inches.

15 feet or 4.57 meters inward from the foul line are a set of 7 guide arrows. The first arrow is on the fifth board, and the entire arrows are spaced five boards separately. These arrows provide the bowlers an idea of the path their bowling balls have taken. This helps them become more dependable and guides them toward perfecting their shots.

The bowling lane must be smooth and level. Depressions are permitted, however, as long as they do not exceed 40/1000 of an inch.

From and excluding the foul line, there is an approach that measures not less than 15 feet or 4.57 meters. These are marked by a row of approach dots. There are similar markings 12 feet or 3.65 meters from the foul line. The two rows of approach dots are generally 3 feet or 0.91 meters apart. In this area, a ¼ inch tolerance for the depth of grooves and depressions is given.

Bowling, being a recognized sport, also follows a set of rules and regulations, including the ones which dictate the proper dimensions for the playing area. Official bowling events such as tournaments and leagues all stick to these specifications. It is always good to know what these measurements are, and to make certain that they are implemented.

Bowling Style

It's pretty evident that most people think that getting the bowling strikes is the major goal in bowling.. They are always looking for the strikes and get excited the more they make. And trust me, I am no different than the majority. As long as I have been bowling, I still get a thrill seeing that bowling ball mow those pins down in a clean sweep. It is an empowering feeling!

When we think of strikes we think of them as being the top score, ten points and also they give you that added bonus of the total points you score on the next two throws. One other positive purpose of a strike is that once you strike you don't have to worry about missing picking up a spare or worry about getting a split.

Nothing wrong with that. One of the attractions of bowling is the social aspect. But if you're making idle chit-chat, sharing gossip, comparing stock market portfolios, discussing business concerns or complaining about your boss, that's not going to improve your average. If, like me, you're in this to be the best that you can be, then you're squandering a valuable resource.

Socialize all you want with your league buddies, but talk about their game rather than their favorite television shows. Talk to the better bowlers about how they test for conditions and other variables.

Wear your bowling shoes even in practice sessions. It is okay to rent from the bowling shops also, but it is better to get suited to your own pair in preparation for your competitions or other future games.

You can easily choose from any of the brands available because they don't have that much difference in terms of quality and style. What is important is that they fit you comfortably.

Remember to inform the sales person whether your dominant hand. Also choose the size just right for your feet. It is best to try and fit it so you would feel if it is comfortable enough for you.

I learned an important lesson last season from one of the best bowlers in our league. You need to let the more laid-back, quiet people know that you truly value their input. Make it clear that you're not the type who resents constructive criticism.

I'm a good 30 pins under where I want to be average-wise. I know the best way to get where I'm going is to take direction from better bowlers. This one night I was having a terrible time, missing all my strikes and spares, making adjustments that weren't helping. I was way below my average and at my wit's end.

Half-way through the third and final game, a high-roller on the competing team saw my frustration and offered a well-intended observation. "I hate to say anything, but all night you've been dropping your shoulder and not following through." I couldn't believe it! It was a total newbie mistake. I closed my eyes, took a deep breath and said: "Now you tell me!"

His reply was a real eye-opener. He said he never says anything because he learned to bowl from his dad, who would critique his game and give him pointers. He said it drove him nuts to the point that he almost quit the sport a number of times.

Now I had been bowling in the same league with this fellow for six years or more. I thought we had become pretty good buds, but I had no idea why he never uttered a comment or helpful hint. I figured he saw me as the competition and wanted to keep his edge. Turns out he was being considerate. He thought I'd be insulted.

Since then, he has become my go-to guy when I'm having a bad night. He still doesn't offer advice to anyone else. But I get all the help I need simply because I let him know what a high value I place on anything he can offer.

Life and becoming a better bowler can be so simple sometimes

When varsity bowling coach Randy Bailey bid farewell to his seniors at his team’s annual award celebration, it also happened to be his 65th birthday. On that eventful day, he received a personalized 65th birthday gift that was far more meaningful than any bowling trophy his bowlers or fellow coaches could ever give him. He received a special CD filled with the voices of his colleagues, his graduating bowlers, and their parents, expressing their thanks and warm wishes. The recordings ranged from funny to sentimental, and demonstrated to him what he had meant to his team.

"I go out there and urge my bowlers to give 200 percent every day. I've always focused on the bowlers, and when they gave me this gift it made it clear how much my coaching meant to them personally".

The bowlers and their parents wanted to give the coach a fun present that was very personal. However, with hectic schedules, the bowlers and their parents knew that the group gift would have to be simple for everyone to contribute to.

The CD the coach received is called LifeOnRecord.

Team mom, Gloria Schmidt, got the idea when her husband gave her a LifeOnRecord CD as a special birthday gift.

The process is simple: friends and family call a toll-free number and are directed to record a favorite memory, wish, or story. There’s no limit on the number of callers that can phone-in or on the total number of recordings you receive. The recordings can be downloaded for free using iTunes so that you can make your own CD, or LifeOnRecord can create a keepsake CD with a personalized label and metal case. An unlimited plan with free download capability into iTunes costs $49.99, or an unlimited plan with a keepsake CD costs $74.98.

It is a unique, affordable service that allows you to create a highly personal gift with ease.

"The bowlers and their families that gave me this gift mean a lot to me, and this is the perfect way for me to remember them and their impact after my coaching days are over. The mom who organized and put this together is my hero".

If you'd like to be a hero to your loved one, you can purchase LifeOnRecord and give them a unique birthday group present.

Santa Claus and Rudolph will be here before we know it and bowlers love to get bowling gifts at Christmas. Some ideas are balls, bags, shoes, clothes, accessories as well as all the little fun items such as key chains, nodders, mugs, jewelry, etc. There are lots of funky t-shirts also available with every bowling comment imaginable.

Many of these gifts can be personalized with names of individuals or teams. Lots of leagues have Christmas parties/potlucks along with a gift exchange the last night of bowling before Christmas and any of these gift items would be great for the gift exchange. There are a variety of items very reasonably priced as most leagues have a monetary limit on the gift giving.

In the spring, bowling leagues quite often have a banquet for the end of bowling with awards given out. This would be a good time to give small gifts as a remembrance of the good times bowling.

Remember all of your bowling friends and teammates at this Holiday Season!!

Bowlers fall into three basic categories: people that have 3 step approaches, 4 step approaches, and then 5 step approaches to get up to the area of the foul line.

Numerous bowlers like the 4 step approach because it helps them have a nice smooth, coordinated way and the time to perfect their release of their ball at the proper rhythm.

Many bowlers readily like changing over to a four-step approach after they first try it. Attend a bowling instructional session with a good instructor, and you will hear: “out for one, down for two, back for three and then slide!”

This approach is very comfortable, you will use a small amount of effort to get the full amount of results.

Now lets look at step one in this delivery with 4 steps. This step is the push away step with your right foot (if you are right handed) and where the phrase comes in that is, “Out for one”. To this step one is the push away.

With the push away step you should also launch the ball forward and a little to your right (if you are right handed), to allow room to do the step 2 and your pendulum type swing for your arm. You you don't push the ball a little to the right you will collide with your right leg as you take step 2.

As you take step number 2, your left hand should be taken off the ball. This is done very quickly for the most part, but can vary. Sometimes bowlers remove their left hand as they do the push away step, or a moment before the full step is done. Just don't leave the left hand touching your ball going into the step number 2. That could create you a problem.

Your ball should do a swing like a pendulum during the step number 2. don't ever force this. Let your ball's weight do the work.

“Back for three, and then slide.” After you finish the slide your left foot needs to be about 3 inches back from the foul line. Don't try too hard to make long strides, the fact is that short strides usually work best.

For every bowler, the number 3 step should have the ball in a total back swing. At this point if you have made any mistakes it is most likely too late to correct them, you are committed. Actually after you began the push away is the point where it is too late.

For step number 4 this is the slide step and your ball moves quite easily forward, due to the ball's weight doing the swing. Here again do not force the ball.

Be certain to lean forward when you do your slide, and keep you right foot far enough back to balance yourself, and also it can act as a brake to your slide when needed. As you finish your slide you should find the left foot at least 3 inches in back of the foul line.

Changing to four steps from three, you need to remember that your steps need to be like you are walking.

No need to force your strides into long ones; the fact is, that the strides that are short are more advantageous. You will discover, that a few bowling places have shorter approaches to work with, so the shorter strides help in these cases.

One other thing that is very important with your approach, no matter what number of steps you take, is the fact that you need to keep the right arm right next to your side. Your elbow should practically rub against your side.

Bowlers need to practice their approach, they will not go back to another after they do!

Fall league bowling is just around the corner. This is an excellent way to make new friends and reconnect with old ones. If you are moving across town or across the country, league boling is a good way to get acquainted and have fun. Most leagues run from the beginning of September to the end of April or first of May.

There are leagues for beginners including people who have never bowled before as well as leagues for experienced bowlers. Some of the many leagues are for seniors, juniors, men, women, men and women mixed, scratch, etc. There are leagues that bowl during the day as well as evening and even some late night leagues.

The bowling alley has balls and shoes for rent and some have pro shops where balls and shoes can be purchased if desired.

Just give the bowling alley a call or stop by. They have leagues who are looking for individual bowlers as well as teams.

Happy bowling!!

Think it costs a lot to look like a high class, flashy bowler, just like the pros? Think again. We live in the age of the Internet. Online bowling shops constantly undersell themselves, competing against each other with deals that practically give the merchandise away.

Ever since Bowlersparadise made waves by becoming one of the first online bowling shops in 1999, sites on the web have been clambering all over themselves to get their piece of the digital pie. This means huge discounts for bowlers looking for cheap bowling balls. Forget the sporting goods shop. It’s a thing of the past, little more than a museum, a good chance to look and handle the merchandise. Let’s face it, you’ll find the same quality bowling balls online for much cheaper, usually for half as less than the store.

Bowlersparadise isn’t the only online shop lobbing values like strikes down the lane. There are plenty of others, some with even greater rebates. Online shops can afford to offer their equipment at close to wholesale prices. In fact, you can usually spend the same for a ball as the sporting goods pay from the wholesaler. Skip the middleman. Get your cheap bowling balls online from the source, and reap huge savings.

In fact, you’ll find a wider selection through the Internet, especially those one-of-a-kind bowling balls that light up the lane with absolute glamour. Shining like diamonds, like magical orbs of light, these bowling balls almost seem to come from another planet. Bowling balls are all about fashion. Find that sleek, magical ball of your dreams. Make people remember you when you’ve bowled that perfect game.

Choose your own ball from the brand or model of your dreams. Customize it to fit your unique desires and bowling style. Nobody bowls like you, so design yourself a ball like no one else’s. Choose the weight that’s perfect for you; align the core to your ideal specifications. When you customize your own bowling ball, you’re building your own dream. Let it be as glamorous as a crystal ball; let it turn heads as it rolls and glows down the lane.

Choose the bowling ball you’ve always wanted. The choice is up to you. Your ideal ball is out there somewhere on the Internet. With discounts competing for your business, you’ll pay far less than you would in a sporting goods store. With these discounted alternatives, your bowling ball dream can be far more affordable. Be flashy like the pros without breaking your budget. Online shopping puts wholesale merchandise at your fingertips like that very next spare.

There are two sides to any coin. Some occasions call for a sport coat and a tie; others are t-shirt and jeans affairs. Sometimes you need sports merchandise that’s functional; other times call for turning heads.

Fashion or function is always up for discussion. In bowling, you need it all. There are times you need toshow off the fashion and let everyone know who you are. Other times, you need equipment that functions and delivers the ball exactly where you need it, time and time again.

When it comes to a bowlingball, you need a little bit of both fashion and function. When you need to turn heads, clear bowling balls are the best. They’re mesmerizing as they glide and glow down the bowling alley, turning heads with their hypnotic magic. people will never forget it.

Of course, nobody will ever forget your score if you play the entire game with a clear bowling ball, either. In fact, they might even suggest you bowl with the lane bumpers they put up for the kids. Because clear bowling balls have no core, they can suffer in performance. Play the entire game with a clear bowlingball, and you’ll pretty much look like an idiot.

Form does suffer from the fashion of a clear bowling ball. Without a core, the ball’s tougher to handle, even if you’re an experienced bowler. It handles the lane a little unpredictably, which can cause your game to suffer if you use it for the entire night.

But the fashion is hard to resist. You can get a variety of things embedded in a clear ball. Imagine a rose, a skull and crossbones, a lucky die or even a favorite shot glass flashing deep in the center of your ball as you roll it down the lane.

A clear ball is best when played at the critical moment, when you’re picking up the spare to knock down the last pin that makes you a hero. That’s when you want the eyes of the crowd following your every motion. Set up the game with a typical ball; knock it down with a clear bowling ball. When you’re looking to make an impression, clear balls shine like diamonds, lighting up the lane with the sparkle of jewels.

You will find that bowling lanes tend to differ from each other and those differences tend to affect the way that ball performs. The following bowling tips will help you to compensate for these differences.

Of course bowling would be rather simple if the only thing one needed to do to obtain strikes was to throw the ball. Unfortunately there is no more chance of that than there is of coming across a naturally blue dog! It is not far from true that each lane is unique. Although it is not entirely true one often discovers that a pair of lanes do differ.

In bowling lingo some lanes you play run out of the window. You discover that instead of having difficulty hooking the ball you end up with too much hook. On the other hand you might encounter a lane that holds the ball. Instead of being able to have much hook you end up having problems getting the ball to come up in the pocket.

When it comes to the way lanes may differ these are the ones that are most often encountered, however there will be ones that hook appropriately so that it is perfect for you. Of course you need to bear in mind that a lane that is perfect for you might not necessarily be so for your teammates, so if they are not enjoying as much success as you are you should not give them a difficult time.

Depending on what type of lane that a bowler is bowling on he or she is able to govern their standard delivery in a way that is natural to them. Therefore, no matter what lane you are bowling from the first ball you bowl should be delivered from your normal position. You need only move once you have seen the way the ball moves, not before. The most basic rule for moving is:

You should move slightly to the left, assuming you are a right-handed bowler but still use the same spot as before, however this move is made only if the ball is coming up too fast or is crossing over.

This would be necessary on lanes one would describe as too slow.

When spot bowling you need to take the spot down lane from which the ball breaks toward the pocket into account. In most cases this occurs around two thirds of the distance down the lane and is definitely not as far to look as the number one pin.

You need to imagine a line drawn from where you take your stance all the way down the lane, depending on how much your ball breaks. From the spot where the ball breaks, you then move to the foul line and release the ball so that it rolls over your spot. Although some bowlers find that this spot is too far down the lane, others find it to be rather beneficial to their game.

When you are playing on so-called fast lanes it can be helpful to move a bit to the right of your usual spot. This is necessary if your ball does not reach the number one, or head, pin.

You might find that the method used by more experienced bowlers is the one for you.

In this method you do not need to move to the left on a slow lane, instead you move the spot you have chosen a bit to the right and begin from the same place on your approach.

Also, if you are on a fast lane you move the spot a bit to the left and proceed as above.

If you find that there is too much hook you might find that moving the spot slightly to the right, instead of your position, is more suitable for you.

Remember not to make any big moves whether of your position or of your spot. One board can have a significant effect.

If you bowl in unfavorable conditions often it will aid you in learning how the ball will perform. You know you are a pro when releasing just one ball lets you know what the proper adjustment to make is.

Finally, in order to find the strike pocket you can change your ball’s speed. If your ball does not reach the head pin slow the speed, or, alternatively, increase it if your ball keeps crossing the lane.

It is necessary to mention that this method is not in line with basic bowling rules which call for the bowler to master a smooth delivery and not to change it.

The more experience you have the more capable you will be of not only reading your lane but also of making the correct adjustments.

If you want to play better and amaze your fellow bowlers you will love the hints and bowling tips you will find at http://www.bowlingtips.org

A popular, fun, but unusual sport is the 10 pin game of bowling. Very often, when you deliver your ball, it will look like a strike ball, heading straight for the 1-3 or 1-2 pocket. But then you are left with a number 8 and 10 combination. Or some other pin combination or just one pin left standing and you are left with a feeling of being robbed of your strike.

Here is something you should know that will be a completely surprise to you. There are twelve inches between each pin and it’s a good distance to travel. A pin will not travel this distance the same way, each time it’s knocked down. You can get permission from the alley you go bowling and check closely the placement of each pin.

The distance from the number one pin (or head pin) is 60 feet. What looks like a perfect strike ball will hit that pin differently, by a fraction of an inch, each time and from the distance you are bowling it’s not noticeable.

A perfect, by the book, strike is when the ball hits into the 1-3 pocked deflecting left of the 3 pin into the 5 pin, the 5 pin to the right into the 9 pin dropping into the pit. The 1 pin moves left into the 2 pin and the 2 pin into the 4 pin taking out the 7 pin. The 5 pin moves into the 8 pin and the 3 pin carries the 6 pin and 6 takes out the 10 pin.

A real punisher is the 8-10 split. You may have missed the perfect strike by less than a quarter of an inch, when this combination of pins comes up. Your ball hit the 5 pin a fraction too light and shot across in front of the 8 pin. Your ball too light on head pin (1 pin) and the 6 pin did not move directly toward the 10 pin, going around it.

In the game of bowling (10 pin) it is necessary that several pins move in a straight line in order to get a strike. You should know that it’s easy to have one or two pins standing. Even though the ball looks good from 60 feet.

These are just facts and not meant to discourage you. So that you know the reason your strike ball may not produce a strike.

If you watch the championship on AMF in action either on television or at an actual tournament you may have seen them spill the pins in a league. You may, as one among average bowlers and even been amazed how easy these stars score 200 and higher and their 700 and sometimes 800 game series.

A 153 average is a long way from a 200 average. The male bowler scores, for the last season, average around 153 and for women bowlers the average is around 130. Remember you are an average bowler, because that’s what you want to be, maybe you are strictly a beginner or not really interested or maybe you’re bowling just with friends for the fun of it. However, before you know it…your hooked!

A major difference from a star bowler and those who in the 170 - 180 averages is the ability to be able to shrug off a bad game. Even a champion occasional hit’s a game in the low 100’s and it only takes a couple of eight or nine counts, several splits (maybe 3 or 4) or even one miss and a champion has a 140 game.

With some practice your 10 pin game of bowling will improve and so will your scores. The more you practice the more your improvement. You will be surprised how easy it is to accomplish that improvement.

The surface material of the ball is probably the most critical aspect to consider in purchasing a bowling ball. This determines the friction on the lane as the ball travels down the lane. More friction gives more hook.

Following are the different types:

Polyurethane or plastic--Great for beginners. Has the least friction. Fairly inexpensive and easy to control.

Urethane--Gives better pin action than plastic and has more hook.

Reactive--Called this since the ball reacts to the lane surfact. Good pin action and hook.

Particle--Designed for maximum friction and maximum reaction to the oil on the lanes. Good for bowling with a high speed ball. This ball has minute particles added to the surface which has a grabbing effect on the lanes.

Whatever type of bowler you are, having the right ball is very important.

For bowlers, two items of equipment in particular can put large distances between competitors as far as success goes: the correct shoes and balls.

The proper bowling shoes are absolutely necessary to becoming a consistently great thrower. The “proper shoes” means not only shoes that fit well – as well as any other athletic shoe – but also shoes that are suited to the lanes that are being played. Finding the right balance of slip and grip is what will make timing the release of the ball so much easier, as the slip and grip features of the shoe consistently grip the lane in the same way. Many bowlers love Dexter bowling shoes because that company produces a wide variety of shoes that are suited to different styles of footwork and -- to some extent – unique flooring conditions in individual lanes.

As far as bowling ball go, ball selection requires consideration of a number of factors. Most in the know consider Hammer bowling balls to offer the most options to suit any bowling style. First, a ball should be beautiful and representative of their owners’ personalities. Second, they should be the correct weight for the bowler using them – heavier for those wanting more force and who have the strength to throw them, and lighter for those who aren’t as strong, who want maximum control of the ball. Third, the exterior of the ball should be specific to the flooring of the lane. Finding the right balance of friction and slickness is important, since friction helps with accuracy but hurts spin and velocity. Finally, and perhaps most important, is the shape and density of the core. A denser core will result in greater spin, while a less dense core will result in a more balanced rotation. Cores can be shaped to be heavier on the top or on one side to provide that little extra weight that will get the ball really spinning.

Optimal bowling shoes and bowling balls transform good bowlers into great ones Dexter bowling shoes and Hammer bowling balls and accessories provide the most options to bowlers of all skill levels and styles that are usable on any lane.

Most of the oil is on the middle part of the lane. From about the second arrow to the gutter, less oil is present. This allows for more hook on the ball.

If you throw on the outside area, the ball hooks toward the pocket. If you throw toward the center of the lane, the oil keeps the ball headed toward the pocket.

Occasionally the opposite happens where the oil is more on the outside so an adjustment would be necessary.

Sometimes the entire width of the lane will be oily, an adjustment would need to be made for this.

Aim for the arrows instead of the pins for better accuracy. The arrows are located a ways out on the lane. Rolling the ball over the arrows will take some foot adjustment at each arrow. The adjustment should be to the right for the futherest arrow to the right. Move slightly to the left for the next arrow going left toward the center and left again slightly for the next arrow to the left and etc. There are also dots at the approach which may be used the same way as the arrows.

The surface roughness of a ball determines whether it will hook in the oil and also how much direction change there is. Some balls have a cover that has surface spikes that are far apart which creates a lot of ball motion. Plastic balls which have less ball motion have surface spikes that are much closer together.

Effective in April, 2009, manufacturers of bowling balls will be required to use certain specifications for the surace of bowling balls they produce.

Gorge yourself on everything from onion rings to chocolate chip cookies at most bowling alleys in the United States. From the east coast to the west coast, fairly good food in available at local bowling centers.

Bowling alleys were checked in California, South Carolina, Maryland, and Texas. Some regular items available at most establishments were pizza, burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, tacos, fries, nachos, chicken, etc.

There was also food typical of the local area such as Cuban Rueben in Miami and pulled pork sandwiches in Atlanta.

Also found on some menus was calimari, sushi, and lobster kebabs. Some of the newer alleys feature dejays, dance floors, plasma tvs as well as billiards and video games.

There are also all kinds of drinks available including beer, wine, mixed drinks, soda, and coffee.

This is certainly different than Laverne and Shirley and Al Bundy experienced. From a personal view, eating at the establishment while bowling is very relaxing.

The following are some of the general rules of bowling:

The person on the right is allowed to go first if two bowlers approach the line at the same time.

It is not permissable to jeer or make comments while a person is bowling.

Bowlers are expected to remain in the settee area while someone else is bowling.

There are some other rules pertaining to league bowling of which the following are a few:

The members of the team must join the American Bowling Congress.

Each team member pays a predetermined fee each week, which pays for bowling and a small secretarial fee.

The secretary computes all of the statistics and team standings.

Each team pays a sponsor fee at the beginning of the year.

The bowling year consists of a predetermined number of weeks.

Substitutes are allowed as long as they follow the same rules as the general team members.

Each league will have league officers elected by other team members. These officers handle any disputes, business, etc.

The shirts range all the way from simple t-shirts with pictures up to glitzy shirts from the past.

A true bowling shirt is a box cut, short sleeved, with a button up front, pocket, and small collar. Most bowling shirts are very colorful, with panels of different colors, such as black and red. They also have piping along the shoulders.

They are usually made of a cotton/polyester blend. Charlie on the Two and Half Men TV show is fond of wearing bowling shirts for every occasion. Bowling is enjoyed by about 100 million people over several continents.

There are also team shirts which league bowlers favor as they can be customized with the team name, etc. Often referred to as "retro bowling shirts", older bowling shirts from the 40s, 50s, and 60s are very sought after by collectors.

League bowling is competitive, fun, good exercise, and relaxing.

There are many different leagues available such as senior, kids, men, women, mixed, scratch, etc. There are also leagues such as Reno league, which ends with a trip to Reno and also leagues where each team member receives a ball at the end. These are only a few of the ones available at different bowling establishments.

The leagues are all governed by rules from USBC such as how handicap is figured, length of league, etc. Each league can have some of their own rules as long as they comply with USBC.

On a set night, the teams bowl against each other. The leagues are approximately 8 months long and end with a playoff for 1st place. etc. There are also summer leagues, which are for a shorter time frame.

Each league has officers such as President, Vice President, and Secretary. The Secretary takes in the money from the bowlers and keep records of all the scores for each evening.

Most leagues start play in early September but there are usually openings during the season as sometimes bowlers leave and some teams do not have a full team. The number of team members is decided ahead of time by the league such as 3, 4, or 5 members.

It is a good idea to call the local bowling alley and they will know if there are openings on any of the teams. The friends made from these leagues are great and a good time is had by all. League bowling is just waiting for you to join and have a great time!

WHILE CLINTON AND OBAMA ARE STILL BUSY TRYING TO GET THE UPPER HAND in their primary campaigns, we here at the Bowlers Journal have the final results of our own meaningful voting that you’re sure to be more interested in.

These results are from our bowling ball ballots to determine the sport’s best products for 2007. We know you can’t stand the suspense, so without any further preamble, the top vote-getter for the coveted Ball of the Year award is the Storm T Road solid.

The T Road was chosen for its user and lane versatility, overall hitting and carry power and its longevity. The T Road encapsulates a medium-high RG symmetric core (2.57) and a Diff (.046) which produces about 5” of track flare potential. Surrounding this core is Storm’s highly successful R2S coverstock.

Runner-up to this year’s choice was the Hammer Black Widow pearl, sister of last year’s winner, the Black Widow solid. Obviously, that lineage helped.

Other winners include the Hammer Cherry Vibe, which was voted Best Value. The Ebonite Gamebreaker was chosen as Most Underrated, while the Ebonite NVS was voted Most Overrated. The Most Attractive choice was Lane Masters’ World Class Particle Pearl.

In the other areas of voting, Storm’s Shift emerged as the head of the class in the pearl particle category. The Quest, produced by Roto Grip, was the voters’ pick for top solid particle. Top choice in the pearl reactive category was the above-mentioned Black Widow pearl, which emerged as a narrow pick over the Brunswick Twisted Fury. The top solid reactive was the Ball of the Year winner, T Road from Storm. Runners-up in this crowded category were the Morich LevRG and the Brunswick Fury.

This month’s latest and greatest ball releases are sure to be in the running for honors in the 2008 voting in their respective categories. Our feature ball, the 900 Global Break pearl, is the first orb to garner a 17 Breakpoint Shape, the highest rating in my two-plus years of testing.

The 17 rating signifies an extremely strong and angular move at the breakpoint. Naturally, this aggressive move is dependent upon the bowler’s release, lane condition and layout choice. The Lane #1 BuzzBomb sets a new standard in total hook as it earned a 58.5 rating.

This ball will give bowlers a strong midlane move with a hard continuous arc in the final 20 feet. Next up is the Counter Strike from Lane Masters. This particle pearl entry is all about control and exceptional pin carry. Last up is the Brunswick Ultra Zone. The Ultra uses a strong Hybrid cover, which surrounds an asymmetric power plant. The Ultra Zone can be the centerpiece of many a ball arsenal.

The setting of these firsts at this time is appropriate, considering we just heard from several readers who were asking for a “key” so they could better understand all the numbers, new and old. We have printed that “legend” in conjunction with our annual Ball Guide, but we hereby comply with that request as part of our regular column, when space permits, to better allow a handy reference point for all the “real world” and other numbers that accompany each month’s reviewed balls. Enjoy.

Core Design: The BP (Break Pearl) utilizes the exact same asymmetric core found in the original Break. The RG is moderately low at 2.48, the Diff a hefty .055, and the intermediate mass bias is strong at .024. Testing displayed an average of 5-plus inches of track flare, with the majority occurring downlane. This asymmetric core can definitely create the breakpoint shape you’re looking for. Ask your pro shop professional for help with layout and weight hole location. Dual angle drillings work very well with this core design.

Coverstock: The BP’s S-70 pearlized cover will surely attract everyone’s attention. Coloring is a wild combo of auburn (orangecopper) and silver pearl, a striking mixture. The finishing process includes an initial sanding with 600 grit followed by a high gloss polishing. This S-70 coverstock will handle most light to medium-heavy oil volumes with ease. We preferred the box finish for a strong back-end move. Abralon surfaces at 1000, 2000 or 4000 muted the angularity noticeably. Response time off friction is quick with box finish.

Manufacturer’s Intent: 900 Global has introduced a fine line-up of products since its inception less than a year ago. Its newest entry is designed to be later and stronger than the original solid reactive Break (black). Is a light load particle sure to follow?

Test Results: Making a skid flip pearl is not extremely difficult, in theory. You just need a coverstock which “hates” oil and “loves” dry. Sounds simple enough, but the tricky part is producing an effective and versatile skid-flip reaction which plays well for varying release types and on a wide spectrum of lane conditions. The BP is one such ball. We had exceptional results on five of our six test patterns with both area and release forgiveness. Pin carry is also an important criterion, and the BP passed with flying colors. The BP was not overly sensitive in the oil, which can cause unpredictability or squirtiness. When encountering friction, the BP gave us a quick and strong response with an admirable continuation through the pin deck. Two of the more surprising attributes of the BP were its ability to read oil transition and handle carry-down. I believe this is a result of the sum of its complete design: cover strength, core design and surface finish.

When to Use: The BP was a striking machine on fresh house or PBA patterns (Viper, Chameleon and Scorpion are the three we bowled on). The BP was also very effective after midlane breakdown. We were able to move inside the pattern and see ample recovery even after relatively heavy carrydown was present. This is not always the case with a pearlized reactive. Our favorite layouts positioned the pin 4.5” to 5.5” from our PAP, either above or below the fingers. Mass bias placement will have an effect on length as well as on breakpoint shape, so see a qualified IBPSIA-certified ball-driller to insure satisfaction.

Core Design: The powerhouse inside this hook monster is an all new double-sided Doomsday Bomb-2 symmetric core. The RG is medium at 2.50 and the Diff strong at .054. Testing showed up to 6-plus inches of track flare with our 4” pin and CG drilling with a 1” weight hole below our PAP.

Coverstock: You want hook? We got hook. Traction abounds with a factory 1000-grit dull surface. The BuzzBomb’s Pure Grip solid reactive cover is an attractive blend of black and purple with neon yellow lettering. Response time off friction is quick with factory finish or polish applied.

Manufacturer’s Intent: Lane #1 President Richie Sposato had this to say: “We tried to come up with a ball that out-hooks all others because that’s what sells the best. I didn’t want a ball that hooked at your feet and just curved to
the pocket. I was looking to make a ball for oil that rolled early and heavy in the midlane, and hooked strong and continuous on the backend.” Richie is confident that’s what this ball does. He also confirmed the fact that balls with thinner shell thickness do not become oil saturated more quickly. He stated that the outer core wrap aids in wicking away oil from the coverstock, thereby keeping the shell less saturated.

Test Results: The Buzzbomb has set a new total hook threshold for all others to achieve. The 58.5 total hook was compiled as an average hook rating over six different test patterns, and is reflective of the BuzzBomb with box finish. Sanding the surface with 360 and 500 grits added an additional 3-5 boards of hook. With a polished finish, the BuzzBomb’s Real World numbers would be 54.5 hook, 14.5 length and 15.5 breakpoint shape. Performance was exceptional on all medium to heavy volumes. Longer test patterns, such as the PBA Shark (44’), offered little resistance for the BuzzBomb. Pin carry was above average, and the blurring “rev visual” was vintage Lane #1. This rev look was present for even our lower and medium rev rate testers.

When to Use: The BuzzBomb needs oil in the fronts and midlane to perform appropriately due to the cover and core strength. The core/cover combo gave us a strong arcing motion from all angles on the lane. We saw no skid/flip on any of our patterns. Bowlers with higher rev rates or slower speeds may need to smooth the surface or apply polish to lessen friction in the oil and add length. This ball should match up very well at the USBC Open, as this pattern will play much slicker than most typically see in league play.

LANE MASTERS: COUNTER STRIKE 53 Hook 14 Length 14.5 Breakpoint Shape

Core Design: The Counter Strike utilizes the same core as the Sure Strike blue pearl. This tall symmetric core boasts an RG of 2.58 and a Diff of .040. The core shape and higher RG help create added length and enliven the downlane move. The differences in motion between the Sure Strike and this entry are quite apparent, though, because of the coverstocks. The Sure Strike is all about an aggressive backend, while the Counter Strike is all about usability and control.

Coverstock: The Counter Strike’s coloring blend of olive green and white pearl is unique, to say the least. Some will love it and some will hate it, but don’t judge this book by its cover. Judge it by its performance. The base resin is 1000-sanded with a sheen finish applied. The cover has a light amount of particle added, which eliminates over-skid in oil and over-reaction off dry. Response time is moderate off friction.

Manufacturer’s Intent: Lane Masters has produced some fine products, and also offers four distinct pricing categories from which to choose. The Counter Strike is the second entry in the Plus-Performance category. This is its third tier pricing group, following the more expensive Max-Performance and High-Performance categories. Regardless of pricing category, all Lane Masters products perform like premium grade products.

Test Results: Even though the Counter Strike and the earlier reviewed Sure Strike share the same core, the reaction differences are diametrically opposed. The Sure Strike was awarded a 50 hook, 15 length and 16.5 breakpoint shape in real world numbers. It is an excellent aggressive skid-flip ball. Comparatively, the new Counter Strike hooks a few boards more, about a foot or longer sooner, and makes a slower and smoother move off friction. This slower response off friction should not be looked upon as a negative. It simply rolls more evenly, yet still delivers lots of power and carry. Bowlers looking for a urethane-like roll — but with more hook and carry-power — should seriously consider the Counter Strike.

When to Use: The Counter Strike displayed a wider range of use than one would expect from a particle coverstock. The higher RG (2.58) provides later revs and adds some length. The .040 Diff regulates the flare down to 4” or less, thus conserving energy. The 1000-sheen finish also complements the core specs by providing ease through the front 25’ and supplying just enough midlane traction. Bowlers trying to close their angles and go more direct toward their breakpoint should use longer pin distance layouts such as 5” or so. This lessens the track flare even more and also reduces the total hook a few boards. The Counter Strike displayed impressive breakpoint continuation, and pin carry was most impressive. This ball is a sleeper, and those fortunate enough to throw one will know what I mean.

BRUNSWICK: ULTRA ZONE 50 Hook 13.5 Length 15 Breakpoint Shape

Core Design: The Ultra Zone core is an ultra-low RG (2.45) asymmetric design. The Diff is rated at .048 with a mass bias of .020. Testing showed an average 5” of track flare. This core revs very easily and can be layout-adjusted to create many different reaction looks.

Coverstock: Blue solid, black solid and silver pearl comprise the Hybrid EnMotion reactive cover of this new Zone. The surface is finished with Brunswick’s rough buff medium gloss polish. Response time off friction is moderately quick. Overall cover strength is designed for medium to heavier volumes.

Manufacturer’s Intent: Brunswick wanted to produce a reaction fit between the Twisted Fury and Blast Zone. The Ultra reacts earlier, hooks more and reads friction slightly slower when compared to the Twisted Fury. Compared to a Blast Zone, the Ultra hooks less, has slightly more length and is slightly more angular during the breakpoint phase.

Test Results: The Ultra Zone has many faces depending on layout and surface choice. The 6” pin above the fingers gave us effortless length, with a smooth move off the friction and great carry. This layout also had a 5.5” mass bias distance and no weight hole. With this layout, the stronger your release, the longer you’ll be able to stay with it as the lanes go through transition. Lower rev rates usually have to put 6” pin distances away once carrydown rears its ugly head. The 3.5 and 4.5” pins reacted much more aggressively off the friction and hooked on average 4-5 boards more. They also recover with more angularity as lanes go through transitional phases of midlane oil depletion and oil carrydown.

When to Use: The cover strength and versatile asymmetric core design will afford many options for all styles of bowlers. This core/cover combo will work on all but the driest or oiliest of conditions. That leaves lots of usability. The real world ratings of 50 hook, 13.5 length and 15 breakpoint shape reinforce the versatility of this product. The Ultra also performed very well on our wet/dry oil patterns as it blended the over/under associated with this pattern, and this was with all three layouts (3.5, 4.5 and 6” pins). As stated above, the longer pin and mass bias distances will create added length and reduce total hook a bit. Bowlers attempting to open up the lane can lay this Zone out with strong pin distances (3.5 to 4.5”) and complement the breakpoint shape with an appropriate mass bias distance and weight hole location. Visit a qualified (IPBSIA certified) pro shop to help insure everything is done properly.

MARCH TEST PARAMETERS:

My guest tester this month was Steve Grabowski of Milwaukee. Steve is an accomplished area bowler with dozens of 300 games and a few 800 series. Steve has a 390 rev rate, 34 degree axis rotation, 12 degree axis tilt and average ball speed of 17 mph. Steve’s axis coordinates are 4 5/8 by 1/2 up. We began testing this month on our wood surface at Classic Lanes in Oak Creek, Wis. We initially bowled on the house pattern, which is a 7-to-1 ratio oiled to 41’. Classic Lanes was our choice for the videotaping segment. Next, we bowled on three PBA patterns: the Chameleon, the Viper and the Shark. From there, we went to Olympic Lanes in Milwaukee, where we bowled on their house pattern and the PBA Chameleon, both oiled to 39’. The surface is Brunswick Anvilane, an older synthetic surface.

LEGEND:

Hook: 38-45 for light-to-medium oil; 45-50 for med.-to-med./hvy. oil; 50-56 for heavier oil/longer patterns

Length: 7-11, earlier roll; 11-14, medium length; 14-17, extra length, later roll

Breakpoint Shape: 10-13 = smooth and arcing; 13-15 = strong arcing; 15-17 = strong arc and/or flip

There is a different grip and way of holding the ball for spinners and fast bowlers. So depending on the kind of bowler, one must choose the proper grip for holding the ball.

Bowling is a set up for neck pain. The weight of the ball as well as the motion needed to launch your ball can lead to neck strain. Bowlers use their brains less and their shoulders more (to hurl the ball down as quick as they can while forgetting about good technique).

You even have some bowlers thinking that if they can bench press 130kg or gain 10kg in muscle, then they'll be a great fast bowler. Overuse injuries are gradually appearing pains, aches, stiffness or injury brought on by repeated, mild physical stress to a particular area of the body.

Right arm bowlers almost exclusively develop pain to the left side of the lumbar spine at a point named the pars interarticularis. A combination of rotation coupled with hyperextension and left sided lateral flexion is known to give rise to such fractures.

The bowling action involves repetitive twisting, extension and rotation of the trunk at the same time as absorption of large ground reaction forces over a short period of time. Overuse injuries are also common. Fast bowlers often suffer overuse injuries in the lower back region.

Sports injuries are too common and getting your bowling ball checked by a certified pro-shop operator is a simple step to take to avoid such pain. An overuse injury is usually a sprain, strain or fracture to part of the body that has been used repetitively.

In recent years, however, the field of sports medicine and orthopaedic surgery has begun to develop techniques such as transplantation of one's own healthy cartilage or cells to improve healing. At present, this technique is used for small cartilage defects.

Most doctors agree that the single most important advance in sports medicine has been the development of arthroscopic surgery, or arthroscopy. Arthroscopy uses a small fiberoptic scope inserted through a small incision in the skin to see inside a joint. It is interesting to read about injury statistics for more common sports.

The NSC Injury Facts reports that in 1999, 339,775 people were treated in American emergency rooms for injuries related to baseball and softball, 372,380 were treated for football injuries, 175,303 were treated following soccer games, 22,639 were treated for bowling injuries, and 2,486 were treated for injuries following participation in horseshoe pitching.

No athlete in any sport starts out at full speed. That's what warming up is all about, gradually allowing your body to get into the athletics of your sport. Use of intimidating tactics used by fast bowlers are often unsportsmanlike and promote violence, and are shunned by many teams and players.

The Sports Science Institute at Newlands was contacted for assistance in providing visual and technical aids for our Bowling Academy players. They invited some quick bowlers to take part in a study based on bowling injuries.

It is almost inevitable that if you put a fast bowler through several consecutive competitive matches, he will pick up injuries. While no one considers bowling a contact sport, there are injuries that occur. The most common injuries are to the hand and wrist of the bowling arm.

Recent news stories discussing the popularity and benefits of Wii Bowling for seniors indicate that Wii bowling, as well as Tennis may gain more fans in retirement communities around the country.Wii bowling is fast becoming a favorite pastime at retirement homes. Older adults get some exercise and can improve eye hand coordination when playing Wii bowling, or any of the many other great games for the Wii, such as golf or tennis.

Having tried the demo version of Wii Bowling shipped with the Wii console, I am impressed. I immediately thought of someone bowling for many years, even decades and then being unable to continue because of arthritis or other medical problems associated with aging.

Wii systems have been difficult to come by and many have waited until just recently to get their hands on one. While the games that ship with the Wii are fun, the true Wii experience comes through when playing the "real" games.

The Wii bowling games from Brunswick and PBA are much more realistic in appearance, with characters that look like real people with every configurable option imaginable from shoes to hats to colored bowling balls. You can customize your character to your hearts content.

The more advanced bowling games for the Wii also offer a much more 'tactile" feel, meaning more sensitive controls and somewhat higher learning curve than the Wii bowling demos. If you like the Wii bowling demo at all, then you really should check out the full Wii bowling games.

While kids and younger adults may love the actions games and shooter games for Wii and other platforms. Older Americans have opted for the benefits of the Wii sports games like bowling, golf and tennis.

These are sports games they often already know how to play, they know the rules and, because of the Wii controller's "easy to learn" nature, within just a few minutes they can be playing and enjoying the game. Now you can enjoy bowling in the comfort of your own home!

Bowling, like many other endeavors, is easy to learn but hard to master. This especially true regarding picking up spares. Few of us are so good that we never leave pins behind after the first ball.

It's important to be concerned at the beginning of each frame with what you are left with as far as spares to pickup. So plan ahead. and, whatever you do, avoid the 7 - 10 split.

Picking up spares takes a lot or practice. It has been said "Pick up the spares and the strikes will come." That is quite true.

There are around 1,000 different spare combinations. Some people have a special ball to pick up their spares which is drilled differently.

Below is a diagram of the pins and their positions. If you are a beginning bowler, it is important to familiarize yourself with this pin diagram.

The 7 pin leave and the 10 pin leave are usually picked up by a far right (7) or far left (10) roll of the ball.

Some spares can be picked up by rolling a strike ball, if the 5 pin is part of the leave. Taking out the 5 pin hopefully will pick up the other pins.

The following are some spares and possible solutions for picking them up:

The 6-9-10 leave would be picked up by the far left starting position and going cross lane.

The 4-7-8 leave would be picked up by a starting position on the far right and going cross lane.

The 1-2-5-8 would be picked up by rolling a strike ball and taking out the 5 pin which will take out the others.

1-3-5-9 could be picked up by starting left of center.

The 5-9 would be picked up by rolling from left of center. This is a hard spare to pick up because it is easy to pick off just one of the pins.

A sleeper spare is where one pin is left almost directly behind the front pin and the ball will pick off the front pin unless the hit is straight on.

The above examples are only a few strike combinations that are possible and maybe a solution to pick them up.

by John Tenn

We've heard it many times before... practice makes perfect. And for good reason-it's the truth! The best way to get better at anything is to practice; bowling is no exception. However, how you practice will mean the difference between slowly improving and supercharging your game!

Bowling Tip #1: Use the right tools

In any sport, using the correct equipment for the job you have to do improves your performance. In bowling, the ball is the most important piece of equipment you will use, so choose the right one for the job! Be sure to try out many, and select one that's the right weight, material and finger-grip fit.

Bowling Tip #2: Are you bowling enough?

To progress at bowling, you need to bowl at least once or twice a week. The most economical way to get this amount of practice in is by joining a league. Usually, the more experienced players show up before the game to practice. This is when you can learn the most, from people committed to the sport.

Bowling Tip #3: Learn to walk the walk

While professional bowlers tend to use a 5-step approach, that's just not suitable for someone just learning the sport. Beginners are usually more comfortable with a 4-step approach. You can practice your approach without throwing a single ball. Keep your shoulders square to the front, your head up, arm swing smooth, and your pace consistent and even.

Bowling Tip #4: Let 'em roll

Spend time rolling the ball. A bowling ball should never be thrown. How do you tell the difference? A thrown ball will land with a loud "clunk" and then slide a few feet before beginning to roll. A rolled ball lands quietly and quickly rolls down the lane. If you find that you're in the habit of throwing the ball, simply slow down. Try taking a slow, deep breath or two before bowling to settle any anxiety. You will hit more pins with a rolled ball than with a thrown one.

Bowling Tip #5: What you think is what you do

Spend time visualizing and analyzing your shots. Visualize your movements and your shots before you do them. If your ball goes consistently too far right, begin a little further left. You will learn to "feel" when you've bowled a good ball. When you do, write it down before you forget. What did you do? How did the ball feel? Where did the ball hit? Keep it for future reference so you can do it again.

Bowling Tip #6: What if I can't be at the alley enough to practice?

Any smooth surface with a long, clear distance is suitable for practicing your approach. It's not safe to practice the release, however, as a bowling ball will easily roll straight through walls if you miss your target! Not to mention you'll ruin the surface of your ball. When practicing at home, mark your foul line and arrows in masking tape or other material that will not damage your floor. Also mark where your toes need to be for each step. Practice your approach until it's second nature.

You can practice your arm swing outdoors with a bucket of water with a small hole at the bottom. The water drops on the ground will mark the path of your arm and the direction the ball would go. It's a good way to see if you arc around your body when you bowl and which direction your arm is going. This can be a very enlightening experience.

Bowling Tip #7: Don't spare yourself the trouble

It's a very good idea to practice picking up your spares. A bowler who can consistently pick up his spares can easily hold a 180 average without getting any strikes. It's especially useful to practice bowling at the 7-or 10-pins by aiming at them and bowling across the strike zone (the "x" on the lane) from the opposite side of the lane.

By practicing these bowling techniques on a regular basis, you'll be honing the skills that will help you improve your bowling game!

The great Earl Anthony - Pro Bowlers Tour 1981

Earl Anthony

He was born in 1938 in Kent, Washington and passed away in 2001. The first sport he was involved in was baseball. He was offered a contact with the Baltimore Orioles, but tore his rotator cuff at spring training, which put an end to the baseball career.

Earl Anthony joined a company bowling team where he was working and was very good. He turned pro in 1963 and in 1970 won his first PBA tournament. In 1982, he was the first bowler to win $1,000,000. He continued bowling over the years but won his last tournament in 1997 and passed away in 2001.

The professional bowlers make it seem so easy to bowl that strike. They throw the ball and all the pins go down. Of course, they bowl hundreds and hundreds of games over a period of time. Practice really does help.

One important aspect of bowling a strike is having the right size ball which has been drilled properly for the finger holes. The release of the ball is very critical to bowling a strike. Putting a lift on the ball is key to success in bowling a strike. This is accomplished by squeezing the ball which causes the ball to rotate to the left hand side of the headpin.

Releasing the ball at the foul line rather than following through and getting the ball out onto the lane is not as likely to result in a strike. The ball can also be released without a lift which is a straight ball. A straight ball isn’t as likely to produce a strike.

There are three step, four step, and five step approaches used by bowlers. Four step is the most common, starting on the right foot and ending with a slide on the fourth step, which is the left foot.

The five pin is very crucial in bowling a strike. Putting the ball in the 1-3 pocket will hopefully take out the 5 pin which creates the pin action to take down the rest of the pins.

Stone balls were used in the early days of bowling. Stone balls were replaced by wood, hard rubber, plastic, polyurethane and resin balls. The early balls did not have finger holes.

Plastic, polyurethane and resin are used mostly in modern times. Plastic is a good choice for a beginner bowler or for someone who only bowls occasionally. Urethane and resin balls grab the surface of the lane better to allow for more hook. Urethane and resin are generally preferred by the professional bowler or someone who bowls quite often.

Balls come in a weight from 6 to 16 pounds. Most women prefer 10 to 14 pounds with men going up to 16 pounds. Balls come in a wide variety of colors with swirls and characters such as Betty Boop and Superman. Inside each ball is a core which makes each ball behave differently. There a three finger holes drilled in the ball at time of purchase. There is a thumb hole, middle finger hole and ring finger hole.

The two types of finger grips are conventional and finger tip. The conventional grip is gripped up to the second joint of the finger and the fingertip is gripped up to the first finger joint. There is a middle grip sometimes used which is in between the conventional and fingertip grip.

A fingertip grip allows for more control but requires strength. There are several measurements taken of the hand and fingers when the ball is drilled to ensure the best fit. Some people have a couple of extra holes drilled for control.

Bowling has been around at least 7,000 years since an archaeologist dug up a child's grave site from this time and it contained a stone ball and 9 pins.

In the 3rd century in Germany, bowling was a religious rite. There was a club carried called a kegal, used for protection. The kegel was stood up in the church cloister symbolizing a heathen and a ball was rolled at it. If the kegal was knocked over, the church member was said to have killed the heathen and was honored at the banquet.

Bowling spread from Germany to Holland and Switzerland and later to France, England and Spain. The first public establishment in England was in the 15th century and was associated with taverns.

The original bowling surfaces were clay, slate, and cinders with wood being used later. A maximum score of 200 was used toward the beginning, but was later changed to 300 to allow for more chance to improve the game. 10 pins were also adopted later as bowling grew in popularity.

The sport of bowling came to America with the Dutch colonists in 1626. German immigrants used bowling as an outdoor family activity.

In about 1840, America's first indoor bowling establishment was opened in New York. Gamblers were drawn to the sport. Bowling spread to other areas of the country, however, bowling was played with different rules in different parts of the country. Eventually bowling groups were formed called clubs. Uniform rules were adopted.

The National Bowling Association was formed in 1875 to ensure certain standards, however, it didn't survive. The American Bowling Congress was formed later and most bowlers today belong to ABC.

Automatic pin setters were introduced in 1952 and bowling continued to gain in popularity. With the computer age came the computer scoring which eliminated keeping score by hand.

League bowling is popular in modern times as well as individual bowling with friends.
